His early education began in a convent school. Post completion of his college degree at St. Aloysius College Mangalore, he pursued his MBBS degree at the Government Medical College, Mysore, and passed out with honors in 1964. Subsequently, he joined the Delhi University in 1970 for his MS (Ortho) and became a full-fledged Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons (England), Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and Fellow of American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Shantharam Shetty has more than 40 years of teaching experience. He joined as a Asst. Professor in 1971 and became the Head of the Orthopedics Department and went on to become the Director of Post Graduate Studies at Kasturba Medical College(KMC), Mangalore and has rendered more than 26 years of yeomen service. He was the Dean of the K S Hegde Medical Academy and retired from KSHEMA in 2007.
Presently he is the Pro-Chancellor of Nitte University, Mangalore. He was the first Vice Chancellor of the Nitte University and also the Vice Chairman of the Nitte Education Trust. He is an Orthopedic Surgeon of international repute, a teacher par excellence and an able administrator. He is a visiting Professor at various universities in the U.S.A., U.K., Germany and India. Dr. M. Shantharam Shetty is a post graduate examiner for various Indian Universities. He was the President of the Karnataka Orthopaedic Association in 1985, Orthopedic Associations of South Indian States in 2003 and the President of Indian Orthopaedic Association in 2009 which is having the membership of 8,500. He is the Trustee of AO Foundation Switzerland since 2006, representing India. The AO Foundation is an International Foundation specialized in the treatment of trauma and disorders of the musculoskeletal system and having over 10,000 healthcare professionals engaged in research, development, clinical investigations and education. He continues active research and practice in the field of hip and knee arthroplasty and trauma. He is the Chairperson of AOTrauma India Council and World Bunts Foundation Trust, which has members all round the world working for betterment of Bunts community specially in Education and Health care.
Academic :
Has trained more than 300 post graduate students in Orthopaedics both M.S.(Ortho.), D.Orth. and DNB candidates apart from regular undergraduates who are in different parts of the world and India serving as Orthopaedic Consultants and teachers.
- Has presented more than 182 scientific papers in International, National and State Conferences with 43 publications. Was awarded the best paper award 4 times and co-authored one book and wrote a chapter in another.

- Delivered 64 CME lectures all around the country and abroad including 13 named orations at International, National and state levels.
- Post Graduate examiner to various Indian Universities and National Board Examiner and Inspector, National Board and Medical Council of India and examiner to International Examinations held by SICOT.
- First Vice Chancellor of Nitte University, Mangalore from Sep. 2008 to July 2012
- Now the Pro-Chancellor of Nitte University.
Administrative posts held :
- Past President Karnataka Orthopaedic Association – 1985 President – Canara Orthopaedic Association since 1990-2003, conducted many National CMEs and Workshops and President of Orthopaedics Association of South Indian Surgeons comprising of 5 southern states – 2003-2004 and conducted workshops and CMEs
- Project Director of Lions Artificial Limb Centre which has provided 65,000 artificial appliances till now to the physically handicapped. This centre is recognized by Artificial Limb Manufacturing Corporation of India.
- Lions Governor – District – 324-D-1995-96 – Project worth Rs. 3 crores were completed during his tenure.
- President Indian Orthopaedic Association 2009 – India. The theme for the year was “Disability free India” and all the states worked for the theme.
- Chairman – World Bunts Foundation which has members all round the world working for betterment of Bunts community specially in Education and Health care
- AO Trustee Switzerland nominee from India since 2006. Has conducted 22 trauma courses in different parts of the country since then.
- Chairman, AOTrauma India – the first Chairman to be nominated by AO Foundation.

I have been a National Board of Examination’s teacher for the past twelve years.

I also have regularly attended annual meetings of the Arthroplasty Association, IOA, KOA and OASIS.
